Communications

Making sure the right people understand the right message at the right time.

That might mean communicating with customers, staff, partners, stakeholders, the press or the wider public. It could be a website page, press release, internal update, customer email, leadership message, case study, campaign copy or a difficult announcement that needs careful handling.

Good communication is clear, useful and appropriate for the audience. It avoids noise, jargon and overcomplication. It helps people understand what is happening, why it matters and what they need to do next.

Sometimes communications sits on its own. Other times, it supports a wider brand, marketing or creative project. Either way, the aim is to bring clarity to the message and make it work properly for the people receiving it.

How I approach Communications
Understand Plan Write Shape Share Review

Understand

First, I get clear on the situation, audience and purpose. Who needs to know? What do they need to understand? What do they already think or feel? What response are we trying to create?

Plan

Next, I work out the best way to communicate. This includes the message, format, timing, channel and tone. A staff update needs a different approach to a press release, customer email, website page or campaign message.

Write

I then create the copy itself, making sure it is clear, structured and appropriate. The aim is to make the message easy to understand without losing the meaning, importance or character of the business.

Shape

Once the words are in place, I refine how the message is presented. This might involve hierarchy, headings, supporting points, visuals, layout, proof points or adapting the same message for different audiences.

Share

The communication then needs to go out through the right channels. That could be email, website, social media, press, printed materials, internal systems, presentations, meetings or direct customer contact.

Review

Finally, I look at whether the message landed properly. Did people understand it? Were there questions or confusion? Does anything need to be followed up, clarified or improved next time?
